Advocating For Yourself At Work
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Our CEO and Founder, Jessica Chen, recently hosted a Soulcast Media | LIVE event on LinkedIn, where she interviewed Women's Leadership Speaker, Journalist and Author, Selena Rezvani. They shared tips and personal stories about advocating for yourself at work.
Here are the takeaways for VIP Comm Pass members:
- Communications is a skill anyone can learn and get better at.
- The ACCT framework can help you advocate for yourself strategically.
- A - Asking for what you want
- C - Circling back
- C - Celebrate your wins
- T - Turning down requests
- Adopt the mindset that you're either going to win or learn by making this request. Shift your mindset to eliminate the idea of failure.
- When asking for what you want, showcase how everyone will benefit rather than just you. It's about mutual gain.
- The idea is to think about your request from the person with whom you are speaking to about your request. Use the GPS framework:
- G - Goals - Try to hook your request to the goal this person/company may have.
- P - Passions - Try to hook your request to the passion this person/company may have.
- S - Struggles - Try to hook your request to the struggles this person/company may be facing.
- If you get a "no," - tap into your network. Talk to people who are further along in their careers. They may be able to help tweak your ask.
- Don't be afraid to ask for what you want again.
- Lean towards having a bias to action.
- When you do follow up, think about how you can offer a new piece of information to the person you are talking to.
- Following up keeps you top of mind.
- Be proactive about what you really care about.
- Talk about an accomplishment as a learning discovery.
- Normalize sharing wins.
- Saying no is part of advocating for yourself. Being a yes person may not shape the career brand you're looking to create.
- It's important to do an audit to find out what is no longer serving you. And then think about the areas where you want to stretch and push yourself.
- Changing from a harsh inner critic voice to a coach voice can help you become a better advocate for yourself.
