Building Your Career Brand

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Our CEO & Founder, Jessica Chen, recently hosted a Soulcast Media | LIVE event on LinkedIn, where she discussed how to build your career brand strategically. She shared tips and personal stories about the importance of crafting your career brand. Here are the takeaways for VIP Comm Pass members:

  • Regarding our work, we have to think about how people perceive us.
  • We need to be intentional, strategic, and consistent.
  • When people hear our name, they should know what we care about and what impact we are making. They need to understand what our differentiating factor is. All of this is our career brand.
  • We know the working us but don't often think about the visible us.
  • When people at work see us, do they recognize our work? Do they know our contributions? Do we know how to advocate for ourselves and stay top of mind? This is the visible us.
  • If we are invisible, if people don't know what we are doing, if they don't see the value in us, then we are expendable because perception is reality.
  • We have to get really good at talking about what we do because otherwise, opportunities will be given away.
  • We have to reframe about talking about ourselves and the work we do.

building your career brand

  • Credibility in the workplace is so important; it is what people think about you when they hear your name. Are you someone who adds value?
  • A person who can build credibility in the workplace is very mindful about taking on mission-critical work and communicating the process - talking about what they're doing and what is happening.
  • How you communicate the process in good and bad times will make people trust your judgment.
  • A career brand isn't about being agreeable. Just doing the work is not a career brand. We can't assume people will know what we are doing. People need to see you and see the work you are doing to know the work you are doing.
  • You advocate because you care about the work you are doing. Advocating is not selfish or self-serving.
  • When you can reframe advocating to think about others and the impact, it feels less about yourself and more about its impact on the team, organization, and clients.
  • Mastering The Ask - SAW Framework:  S – strong case A – align our objectives W – why us?
    • Strong Case – Why now? Who will benefit and why?
    • Align Our Objective – Will it cost money, time, or resources, and where would that come from? Is the return on investment worth it for the organization?
    • Why Us – Why are we the right fit for this? Why do we want to do it?
  • If we don't invest the time to create our career brand, other people will do it for us.
