Developing Speaking Presence At Work
Developing Speaking Presence At Work
Our CEO and Founder, Jessica Chen, recently hosted a Soulcast Media Event on LinkedIn, where she interviewed Vicky Nguyen, NBC News Anchor/Chief Consumer Investigative Correspondent and author of Boat Baby.
Here are the takeaways for VIP Comm Pass members:
- Understanding how to communicate with people with different communication styles is important. Some people prefer written communication, others prefer direct or side-by-side communication.
- If you want to improve your communication skills, look to the people you admire and think about what you like about their communication style. Is it their tone, body language, or energy?
- Record yourself when practicing for a presentation and then listen to it. Then, watch it again on mute so you can focus on your body language. Last, listen to it with your eyes closed so you can focus on the words you say, your tone of voice, and your pace.
- Look for as many opportunities as you can to practice your communications.
- It can be easier to speak up earlier in a meeting rather than wait until you feel comfortable, because you can create a narrative that might prevent you from speaking up.
- It's important to over-prepare when you are going into a tricky conversation. Identify the goal and the solution for the conversation, and go over your data and why, so when it comes time for the conversation, you are ready.
- The only person you need to compare yourself to is yourself.
- Developing presence requires you to show up as yourself, figure out who you are, and communicate authentically.
- There is no one right way to show up; you need to show up in a way that feels good for you.
- You will only get better if you put yourself out there and not listen to the negative mental chatter in your head.
- Being curious can help you become a better communicator. The best way to learn is to ask people about themselves.
- You become a more interesting person when you are interested in others.
