Developing Your Executive Presence At Work

Key Takeaways

Our CEO and Founder, Jessica Chen, recently hosted a Soulcast Media | LIVE event on LinkedIn. Chief Culture Curator at Merging Path Coaching, Brooks E. Scott. They shared tips and personal stories about developing an executive presence at work. Here are the takeaways for VIP Comm Pass members:

  • Executive presence is a skill we can learn.
  • Part of what builds a strong executive presence is being able to bring authenticity to our leadership style.
  • The quickest way to diminish our executive presence is to diminish other people.
  • Imposter syndrome is feeling like we aren't supposed to be somewhere, don't deserve to be somewhere, or don't know what we are doing.
  • The narrative that goes on in our heads is what creates our actions.
  • We need to identify our unique differentiating factors, what makes us unique, own it, and double down on it.
  • We have to be able to communicate the great work we are doing, why it is important, and why people should care about it.
  • The stories we tell ourselves are powerful because they turn into feelings. The feelings turn into actions such as how we walk into rooms, how we present ourselves and more.

  • We can't control people's biases.
  • The more clear we are in our communications, the more people will listen to us.
  • Developing executive presence requires us to focus on the three C's, clarity of our thoughts, clarity of our message, and compassion in leadership.
  • Clarity of our thoughts requires us to think about what we are trying to convey to our audience.  We need to be able to say our message in a clear and direct way, this is how we capture our audience.
  • Clarity of our message requires us to tailor our message to our audience, and speak about what they care about.
  • Compassion in leadership requires us to be able to read the room, consider how was we say affects others, and ensure our words are landing the way we intended.
  • Executive presence isn't about brain-dumping everything we know.
  • When people can see we are rushing and cramming in a ton of information, they stop listening.
  • We think that the more information we give, the more executive we will sound, but it's actually the opposite. Speaking less, and listening more are critical for executive presence.
