Make Radical Candor Just Work
Key Takeaways
Our CEO and Founder, Jessica Chen, recently hosted a Soulcast Media | LIVE event on LinkedIn, where she interviewed the Author of "Just Work" & "Radical Candor", Kim Scott. They shared tips and personal stories about how to clearly and honestly communicate what you want.
Here are the takeaways for VIP Comm Pass members:
- Radical candor is caring personally and challenging directly. When we do both at the same time, that's radical candor.
- If we're bright but can't express what we know, it doesn't matter.
- Learn how to get comfortable with silence.
- Understand the power of the pause and don't rush the moment
- Getting on the same page as someone can show we truly care.
- It's our obligation to tell people they're making a mistake before it gets worse and worse.

- Obnoxious aggression is when we challenge, but don't care.
- Manipulative insincerity is when we don't care and don't challenge.
- Ruinous empathy is when we care, but we don't challenge directly.
- It's possible to be both kind and clear at the same time.
- If we don't disrupt bias in the moment, it's going to disrupt us.
- We need to be radically candid about bad behavior, we need to end the default of silence.
- Radically candid framework
- Start in a neutral place; if the person takes our feedback and is sad or mad, then we need to move up in the care direction. We shouldn't ignore emotions.
- Stay present with the emotions and get curious, not furious.
- If the person brushes us off, then we need to go further out in the challenge directly direction.
- It's all about adjusting as you have the conversation.
- It's not a monologue, it's a dialogue.
