Make Work Fair & Speaking Up
Our CEO and Founder, Jessica Chen, recently hosted a Soulcast Media Event on LinkedIn, where she interviewed Siri Chilazi, author of "Make Work Fair." They shared tips and personal stories about making work fair and speaking up.
Here are the takeaways for VIP Comm Pass members:
- As a manager, talking less and listening more can create a more inclusive environment.
- One way to make work fair is to become a "norm entrepreneur" - this is a person who shapes the norms and expectations in a positive direction, to create the kind of culture you want to see.
- The power of norms is that they are these shared but often unspoken understandings of what kind of behavior is acceptable or expected.
- We all have the power to shape what is acceptable.
- The best way to counter perceptions of unfairness is to let the data speak for itself.
- Find proactive ways to ensure you are getting the credit you deserve. You can offer ideas to your manager or senior leadership, like tweaking the slide deck to include everyone's name who worked on a project.
- Fairness is not a program, but it's a way of doing things.
- Look at the things you are already doing and take one thing that you could tweak slightly to make it fairer.
- Whether you're a manager or not, you can present an idea or initiative to bring about positive change.
- Never take no as a final answer. Think about ways you can ask differently, or ask at a different time.
- Only you can know your particular situation, what you can or cannot do to make a positive impact, and whether the environment you're in is receptive to change.
- Super small changes in how we communicate can have a massive impact on behavior.
- Reducing ambiguity can help make work more fair.
