Marketing Yourself For Success

Key Takeaways

Our CEO and Founder, Jessica Chen, recently hosted a Soulcast Media | LIVE event on LinkedIn. She shared tips and personal stories about how to market yourself for success.

Here are the takeaways for VIP Comm Pass members:

  • We must challenge ourselves to change our mindset and find opportunities to market ourselves.
  • Sometimes, our personalities can make it difficult to talk about ourselves and showcase our accomplishments.
  • Often, we can shy away from talking about ourselves because we fear what other people will think.
  • We must reframe our thinking about how we market ourselves in the workplace. Whatever we were doing was the "old way." The new way is to ensure we are being absolutely proactive in our approach.
  • When we talk about our work, we want to ensure we are talking about the benefit we bring to the team.
  • We know we are doing great work that impacts the team, and they need to hear about it.
  • We can do great work and speak about it simultaneously. This is how we build visibility.

marketing yourself for success

  • It is better to engage our audience than dump a lot of information.
  • Being a great communicator isn't just about speaking well; it is also about being an awesome listener.
  • When on video calls, two things can elevate our executive presence immediately.
    • First, our camera positioning. We can push our camera back so it isn't too close to us and then elevate it by using books or a riser.
    • Second is our lighting. We want to ensure we are well-lit. We can use natural light from a window. If we don't have access to natural light, a small ring light can genuinely make a difference. We also will want to be backlit and not lit from the front.
  • Executive presence is asking ourselves, what do people think when they hear our names? We have the ability to control this narrative.
  • How we carry ourselves and the first impression we make matters.
  • The way we communicate can help us market ourselves. Our tone of voice, choice of words, and body language all impact how people perceive us.
  • Our shoulders showcase whether we are nervous or tense. We can pull our shoulders back and down to showcase we are confident.
  • Our hands our one of our best assets for communication. They can help engage our audience. We can use our hands to emphasize points.
  • Our facial expressions make a difference in how people see us. Our smile can exude warmth and competence.

Figuring out how to truly shine in front of our teams, can make a significant impact in our careers.  It's mastering the art of self-promotion.
