Mastering Impromptu Speaking

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Our CEO and Founder, Jessica Chen, recently hosted a Soulcast Media | LIVE event on LinkedIn, where she interviewed Kelsey Moore, Public Speaking Coach | Soulcast Media.  They shared tips and personal stories about mastering impromptu speaking. Here are the takeaways for VIP Comm Pass members:

  • Impromptu speaking is being asked to speak without much preparation. Including but not limited to: being called on during a meeting, speaking to your boss, and giving a quick presentation.
  • Impromptu speaking tends to lower people's confidence. It is important to manage the fight or flight response, so your anxiety is not debilitating.
  • It is important to practice impromptu situations so you can be prepared when asked to speak unexpectedly.

  • Use the Down/Up method. When asked a question, you can first look down and nod as if you were thinking about your response. This will give you an opportunity to collect your thoughts. Take a breath to calm yourself. Then look up and give your answer.
  • Reframe how you think about the situation and your anxiety surrounding being put on the spot.
  • Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Allow for silences instead of blurting out a response or using many filler words when formulating your response.
  • Practice using different types of frameworks to organize your responses: CAR method (context, action, result), Chronological order, 3 main points, and giving context and then moving into the details.

  • Use the EOT method when you need to say no on the spot. E- explain why you can't, O - offer options, T - make sure your tone of voice shows you are being helpful rather than shutting the person down.

Confident communication skills will help you be more comfortable when faced with an impromptu conversation. The more you practice using different frameworks, the more confident you will become.
