Multicultural Leadership Communications

Key Takeaways

Our CEO and Founder, Jessica Chen, recently hosted a Soulcast Media | LIVE event on LinkedIn, where she interviewed the CEO of the Multicultural Leadership Institute, Joy Chen. They shared tips and personal stories about multicultural leadership communications. Here are the takeaways for VIP Comm Pass members:

  • Having a global perspective can help all of us in our careers.
  • Not knowing how to communicate in a global working world will limit our career opportunities.
  • It’s important for us to find belonging in places where it is not just us surrounded by like-minded individuals.
  • Assumptions about others can keep them out of our groups and prevent us from connecting with them.
  • Cultural fluency is the skill of working across cultures. We can do this by traveling, reading, and learning about other cultures. The fastest way to do this is to build one-on-one relationships with different people. Different in race, gender, age, etc. Consciously and intentionally build these one-on-one relationships.
  • If we want people to support us, it is important to build an army of supporters.
  • There is a difference between talking to someone versus talking with someone. People don’t want to be talked to, they want to be talked with. When we talk with someone, it makes them feel like their opinions matters.

  • When people are excluded, silence becomes safer. It is important to become an ally for those who are underrepresented.
  • If innovation is what we are after, we need to strategically structure our meetings so everyone’s ideas can be heard.
  • When we frame our ideas from a we perspective, think about why this matters for us as an entire company. People will be able to see the value of our ideas when it directly impacts the company.
  • The most effective way to showcase ourselves is to show how we've helped others achieve success.
  • The power of effective communications is understanding who our audience is.
