Pitching Yourself Confidently
Key Takeaways
Our CEO and Founder, Jessica Chen, recently hosted a Soulcast Media | LIVE event on LinkedIn. She shared tips and personal stories about pitching yourself confidently.
Here are the takeaways for VIP Comm Pass members:
- When we are strategic in giving an elevator pitch, it can help us build curiosity. Depending on how we talk about ourselves, people listening will think, "Wow, that's really interesting; I want to know more!"
- A powerful pitch creates a strong impression. This means when people hear our name, they remember us for what we're good at.
- A great elevator pitch can also explain why what we know and do is relevant to the people with whom we are talking.
- A good elevator pitch leverages people's emotions and excites them about what we have to say.
- When we think about the power of our elevator pitches, we need to think about how creating our elevator pitches is how we build credibility and hook people in.

- A common misconception about an elevator pitch is that the more we say the better our elevator pitch is. This isn't true. An elevator pitch is not the time to cram in our resume and all of our impressive achievements. An elevator pitch is our time to be strategic.
- When we think about our elevator pitch, we want to remember it is all about the impression we make on other people. The art of a great elevator pitch is people want to know more.
-
Elevator Pitch Formula:
- Teaser - When it comes to our teaser, or how we open our elevator pitches, we must think about the first few words we say. Our objective should be to evoke positive emotions in the people we speak to. We want them to be curious and intrigued by us. The teaser is where we hook our audience.
- Headline - After we've hooked our audience in with our teaser, we need to consider the headline. In the headline, we can discuss one or two high-level accomplishments that give us credibility.
- Body - In the body of our elevator pitch is where we take what we said in the teaser and headline, and prove we know what we're talking about with data and examples.
- Takeaway - Our takeaway is how we end our elevator pitch so people will want to know more.
- If we want to leave a good impression, we have to proactively communicate.
- We can tailor our elevator pitch to our audience and make our pitch relevant to what our audience is interested in.
- We need to proactively find opportunities to keep people in the loop. Keeping people in the loop is how we stay top of mind.
