Stop Overthinking For Work Success
Key Takeaways
Our CEO and Founder, Jessica Chen, recently hosted a Soulcast Media | LIVE event on LinkedIn, where she interviewed Executive Coach and Leadership Coach, Melody Wilding. They shared tips and personal stories on how to stop overthinking for work success. Here are the takeaways for VIP Comm Pass members:
- A sensitive striver is someone who wants to achieve career success but is also more sensitive to the world around them.
- Highly sensitive people have been conditioned not to trust themselves and their judgments. To not overthink, you must learn to trust yourself and your decisions.
- People who are highly sensitive process more deeply than most people. They try to make sense of behavior, and connect it to other events. They take in more of their surroundings and notice nuances and subtleties. Body language and shifts in tone of voice are seen more easily.
- Overthinking causes highly sensitive people to be unable to process all of the information they take in effectively.
- Being able to sense what people need and pick up on body language and tone of voice is central to being a good communicator.
- There are three common types of overthinkers.
- Rumination - Can't stop thinking about a mistake. Being stuck in the past.
- Future Tripping - Having anxiety over the future.
- Analysis Paralysis - You have so many options or choices vying for your attention that you can't make a decision, and you freeze.
- When making a choice, you must consider your key decision-making criteria. Instead of having several criteria to guide your decision, have one.
- The rule of five: Think about five other ways of viewing a situation. Five other possible explanations for this person's behavior. Because their behavior is not always about you.
- Label the negative voice that causes you to overthink.
- Confidence is built on following through on the small promises you make to yourself.
- Create processes or systems for small decisions, like what to wear, so you don't have to spend a lot of energy making those decisions. Then, you will have more energy to make the bigger decisions.
- Instead of getting stuck on past decisions, think about what you can learn from those decisions. This will help you to avoid getting stuck when making your next decision.
