Think Strategic Communication

Key Takeaways

Our CEO and Founder, Jessica Chen, recently hosted a Soulcast Media | LIVE event on LinkedIn where she interviewed Top 50 Business Thinker, Thinkers50, Communications Coach, Dorie Clark. They shared tips and personal stories about how to think strategic communication.

Here are the takeaways for VIP Comm Pass members:

  • There are many ways to be informative and showcase yourself without feeling too salesy.
  • One way to be strategic about how you want to be seen is to consider something you're working on, or you've recently accomplished and plan to talk about these things in a way that will lead you in the direction of where you want to go and how you want to be seen.
  • Anticipating what others may ask you and preparing a few answers or talking points will help you be more strategic in your communications.
  • It is also helpful to consider who you are talking to and what they care about when preparing your answers.
  • The more power and influence you have, the more you can help other people like your team. You have the ability to advocate more.
  • You aren't able to give your all, if people don't understand what your all is.
  • When you do something great, you want to ensure other people see it.

  • You want to make sure you're showcasing yourself in the right context. For example, let's say you're in a group meeting and the subject of increasing revenue comes up. You can say, "Our team has had some success increasing revenue, if anyone would like to talk about that further, I'd be happy to share what we learned."
  • Proactively creating opportunities can help you showcase your abilities, like offering to give a short 5 minute presentation about the success of your project.
  • The long game is thinking about the outcome that you want to achieve and working backward to accomplish it.
  • You want to make sure you are doing what is necessary in the short-term, but always keeping your eyes on the long-term prize.
  • People feel the most satisfied with their work when they feel like they're making progress, even very small steps forward, if they believe they are working towards a worthy goal.
  • You may need to find the time to create opportunities for yourself, even if it is 10 minutes after work, to do something you are excited about.
  • When it comes to networking, if you want to make your own career more secure, it comes from the relationships you have. This can be people internally or externally.
  • If you're at a big company, do people know who you are?
  • You can't make excuses for yourself when it comes to communication. You have to shift your mindset and find a way. You don't have to do it the standard way, but you still have to do it.
